West Wilts Matters
New parking regime next summer
The District Council looks set to take over responsibility for managing on-street parking restrictions from next summer.
Changes to legislation contained within the Traffic Management Act 2004 has seen the process renamed as Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE). This means that powers currently held by the police and traffic wardens will transfer to civil enforcement officers, employed by local authorities.
West Wiltshire will follow similar schemes elsewhere in the county, with the District Council carrying out the work under an agency agreement with Wiltshire County Council as highways authority.
Parking projects manager Simon Philpott explained: "Recent changes to the law have delayed our start date by a few weeks, but we hope to take over on-street parking enforcement from 16 June next year. This will sit alongside how we manage our existing car parks, allowing us to better tackle town centre congestion and ensure that parking is convenient and effective for everyone - residents, shoppers, visitors and businesses."
