Melksham
Town Guide
STROLLING through the old part of Melksham with its mix of grand town houses and pretty terraced town cottages, you soon realise there is much more to the town than would at first appear.
Melksham has a fascinating history. It was once a part of the vast royal forest stretching as far as Chippenham, which was a favourite hunting ground of Tudor Kings.
Springs were discovered in Melksham and an attempt was made in 1815 to develop the town as a spa town similar to Bath.
The Melksham Spa Company was formed by local landowners looking for a promising investment, but the enterprise did not succeed as hoped.
You can still trace some of the fine Regency building in the town, and on the outskirts of the town it is still possible to see some of the original fine houses put up as part of the spa development.
Melksham has some good bed and breakfast accommodation as well as fine hotels only a few miles outside the centre.
Nearby is the beautiful historic town of Bradford on Avon, the county town Trowbridge and the fine historic houses of Chalfield Manor and Lacock Abbey and the Georgian grandeur of historic Bath is only a few miles away.
