Holburne Museum of Art, Great Pulteney Street
Picturesquely located at the bottom of Great Pulteney Street, the Holburne Museum of Art was built in 1796 as Sydney House, and is set in leafy Sydney Gardens.
It was converted into a museum to display the collections of Sir William Holburne. There are paintings by Turner and Stubbs, portraits by Thomas Gainsborough, and notable silver, porcelain, pottery and glass.
The Holburne will be restored and extended with a grant of £4.875 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and improvements include more gallery space, a bright new café and extended education centre. See www.bath.ac.uk/holburne/exhibit for more information. The Holburne will be closed for an exhibition changeover until June 7. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10 am - 5 pm and Sunday 11am- 5pm.
Victoria Art Gallery, Pulteney Bridge
The Victoria Art Gallery is a free public gallery situated in the city centre by the famous Pulteney Bridge.
The building was designed in 1897 by a Scottish architect, John McKean Brydon to celebrate Queen Victoria's sixty years on the throne.
The gallery has a range of changing exhibitions downstairs and upstairs there are works by painters who were active in the Bath area, including Thomas Gainsborough, Walter Sickert and J M W Turner.
Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm and Sundays 1.30pm-5pm.
