I am the custodian of a very old orchard and I’m very aware of my responsibility.
There are nearly 100 wild flowers, common and uncommon, e.g. fritillary. They attract a large variety of butterflies and other insects. Every year I’m surprised to see so many wild bees.
Lizards and crested newts appear, but it would take too long to enumerate al the creatures; this included the yellow-necked mouse and the dormouse.
I shall be pleased to hear from any of your readers who have old orchards and who strive to maintain the traditional habitat for wildlife, so important for future generations to discover.
Monica Dart, The Common, Holt.
