If ever evidence were required, that in this day and age, profit reigns supreme over an ethical trading policy for many multi- national, multi-million pound organisations, then I have seen that evidence.

On two occasions recently in Melksham, once in a department store and the second in a major discount supermarket, products emanating from a source deemed illegal by international law, (the illegally occupied according to the United Nations, West Bank), have been displayed for sale to members of the public.

In both cases, I have written to senior management of the companies concerned, bringing the situation to their attention.

The response has been one of indifference from both organisations.

It is a great pity that the public generally are unaware when buying these products of their exact origin, for the companies have taken advantage of Government guidelines, in respect of labelling.

It is the responsibility of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to ensure that the public it serves is provided with all the necessary information, prior to purchase, in order for an informed buying decision to be made.
