I was completely disgusted on reading the article (Wiltshire Times October 17) telling of the cancellation of the annual firework display at the Beehive field in Bradford.
I know the early history of this event and the fact that, in the early years at least, the pleasure which many local people got from the evening’s event was really immense.
The field was owned by my wife and when the idea was first raised a number of companies showed interest. Together with the land being donated free, companies such as GWR supplied the spectator fencing at cost price and volunteer parents from all three schools helped by building the fire, supplying and selling hot dogs etc and generally ran and did the hundreds of odd jobs necessary to run such an event. The result, over the years many thousands of pounds raised for the schools.
I am amazed and disgusted to think that, say, a dozen from each school are unable to spare a few hours on the couple of days of the event. Does this really show the sorry state to which we have sunk?
