Prompted by the article in last week’s paper, urging residents to have their say on the future of car parking in Wiltshire and, in my case, Corsham specifically, I decided to take my civic duty seriously and logged in to the wilts.gov/portal.

What a completely meaningless, pointless piece of bureaucratic nonsense. Little wonder that councils run out of money when they actually spend money employing people to come up with this sort of nonsense. It falls into the same category as the full-colour newsletter that the council dishes out, to pat themselves on the back and tell us what a great job they're doing.

This survey is just a box-ticking exercise, so the council can say how they’ve involved us all in the decision-making process. The parking issue isn’t rocket science. It is straightforward common sense, with no requirement for endless consultation meetings and planning boards.

I could suggest how to compensate for the apparent financial shortfall that free parking would entail... but I don’t think the council would like my methodology. I’ll wager I’m not alone in my view on this, either.
