Why are the council so set against an obvious, simple traffic change before embarking on the complex and dubious scheme now being voted upon? I mean the making of a one-way system.

If traffic coming into Bradford over the bridge (from the Trow-bridge direction) all turned left and traffic from Church Street, Turleigh, Bath, Bradford Leigh all did likewise, the system, apart from a bit of fine tuning around New Road, would be complete.

The traffic would not stand still with engines running, as it often does now, making the appalling standard of air pollution even worse.

In many places, there would be enough width to allow short-term diagonal parking outside shops.

Most people will remember that, a few years ago, a couple of accidents happening simultaneously forced a large section of this system into operation at a moment’s notice. The traffic ran smoothly for a couple of days, until the accidents and building work was cleared.

A one-way system could be done on an experimental basis for the cost of a few traffic signs, yet no one will try it. If it fails, the status quo can easily be restored and something else tried.

Of course, if the council’s thinking is that if they make the town such a permanent standing traffic jam everyone will find another route, they are probably doing the right thing. But I would remind them that vehicles bring shoppers to the town. They do not come on foot.
