A flurry of letters have attacked the use of wind turbines, the latest predicting they are shattering and falling about us, allowing for the distance turbines should be built from any residential dwelling.

This claim about collapsing is out of touch with reality. There are tens of thousands of wind turbines in use and a few have had problems put down to human error. The whole renewable energy section has had to suffer this campaign of misinformation – like wind turbines being a threat to birds. The RSPB does not agree with this, research showing that only in one or two areas in migratory flight paths have had some problems.

There is not the same concern about nuclear power stations – since 1952 there have been about 10,000 Stage 1 incidents, where human life has been lost, and damage to property of about £30,000, plus others either not reported or ignored by governments and media.

Then fracking, where there is still much not known or being made public about the damage it may cause to the environment and water supplies. For example we are not told what chemicals are used, then there is a huge amount of water needed.

Also, not mentioned is that in the US, for decades they have been burying their waste chemicals from oil and gas drilling and it is now damaging water and the earth and it has been shown that once we interfere with the earth’s rock formation without knowing how it will react.

We are in a mess now because of the standard lack of long-term planning by previous administrations, who have clung onto finite fossil fuels, going to war and dealing with despots to get supplies. Surely by now it must be obvious that apart from allowing us to have our own endless supply of clean renewables from solar, wind and waves, the last one which we have plenty of, it gives us independence from the whims of overseas suppliers, yet hardly gets a mention in debates or reports; all we hear is the wind or nuclear argument.

Scotland has the European Centre for Wave Energy where more enlightened investors from around the world are getting involved, and are exporting much of their renewable energy south. This is 21st century technology.
