I’ve moved to Freshford from Ireland, and in the few years I’ve been here I’ve been struck by the friendliness of the people. In particular I have to commend one local shop, which not only is well stocked and friendly, but is happy to get you out of a pickle should one arise.

I refer to the Westwood Post Office Stores on Tynings Way, Lower Westwood, where not only can you buy a pizza, post a parcel, or buy your groceries, you can get advice about the locality. Even more crucially, the staff, Rita, Ray or Lindsay, can help you in the most practical way.

Recently my car battery was flat and I was late for an appointment. Lindsay took control of the situation immediately, summoned her husband to bring up some jump leads to the shop at the double, and soon I was on my way. It was an act of kindness (and efficiency) that I won’t forget in a hurry.

The shop also acts as a real centre for the village, with people stopping to get their papers, exchange information, and generally have a bit of a natter.

I know prices at local shops can be higher than at supermarkets (although you might be surprised how competitive some lines can be) but there is no substitute for the friendliness and helpfulness somewhere like the Westwood shop provides.
