There has been much discussion recently about the proposed Historic Core Zone in Bradford on Avon and the democratic vote last week was quite definitely in favour of not proceeding.

Irrespective of which way anyone voted, local residents must be applauded for their excellent turnout for the vote which I understand was 40 per cent. People do care about their environment and are prepared to say so.

We will never know whether the scheme would have been beneficial or not as there was no way it could have been given a trial run.

However, the problem of traffic and pedestrians still exists, plus excessive pollution in certain areas.

Recently, there was an excellent suggestion from Pat Ladd proposing a solution of a one-way system. This will not be popular with everyone. Nothing ever is – but why not give it a trial period, assess the pros and cons and then decide.

The Town Council needs to do something and there are not many practical options available. Whether you were a Yes or a No vote, that development is no longer an option. Move on and consider a one-way system.

We deserve some improvement in our traffic system if one is viable.
