Last week’s Wiltshire Times read as a list of Wiltshire Council cuts – whether to the bus which helps elderly people get to the Royal United Hospital or to housing advice services.
Of course we are reminded again and again that the council has no choice and must make cuts.
This is fundamentally wrong. If these cuts go ahead we choose to let them. The wealthiest fifth of the population have 42 per cent of the country’s income and 60 per cent of the country’s wealth while the poorest fifth have only eight per cent of the income and one per cent wealth.
We can ask politicians whether they believe the poorest should suffer more while the richest squirrel their money away in Swiss bank accounts. Don’t accept the ‘we have no choice’ lie.
I urge everyone to challenge the lazy and mean assumption that we cannot afford a fair society.
