In January at the commencement of the General Election campaign the Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, made a plea for all concerned to refrain from personal attacks and smears. He asked that the parties should concentrate on the policies and main issues that are of concern to the electors.

Clearly the Liberal Democrats in the Chippenham constituency do not agree with Nick Clegg’s views, as in their newsletters they cannot resist the temptation to remind readers that Michelle Donelan contested a south Yorkshire seat in 2010 and came came second, and then moved to Chippenham to become Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the 2015 election. It is almost as if the Liberal Democrats want you to think that there is something inappropriate with such an approach.

What they don’t publicise is that Duncan Hames, the Chippenham MP, unsuccessfully contested three different constituencies (Tottenham, Watford and Westbury) before the boundary changes that created the Chippenham county constituency improved the odds of a Liberal Democrat success in the 2010 General Election.

So please Liberal Democrats heed Nick Clegg’s message and stick to the issues.
