Traffic was brought to a standstill on Canal Road last Saturday by vehicles trying to access the recycling depot. The primary cause was the pent-up demand for access following two days of closure, but it was exacerbated by the road closure of The Down causing all traffic to be diverted along Canal Road.

There is a clear need for more access to the recycling centre to avoid this congestion. Also, more could be done within the centre to speed up through-put. For example, green waste, for which demand is heavy, is placed towards the front of the site, and clients waiting to use this prevent others from accessing other facilities at the rear. Some passing system needs to be introduced.

On the approach road outside, lanes should be designated to allow through traffic to proceed.
