Your readers may be aware that about 18 months ago, this association was asked by the town council if it would become the lead organisation in a project to refurbish the War Memorial at Holy Trinity Church in Trowbridge.

This refurbishment is one of the projects undertaken to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The memorial contains the names of every serviceman from Holy Trinity Parish killed in the First World War.

We are pleased that our fundraising efforts were successful. The renovation work has been completed by James Long (Masons) Ltd, the local firm who originally crafted and erected the war memorial in April 1921.

An ecumenical church service to rededicate the memorial will be held at Holy Trinity Church at 3pm on Sunday, September 13 to which we would like to extend a warm welcome to all who would like to attend. The service will be preceded by a parade of standards from the Greyhound car park in Mortimer Street to the church via Newtown.

During the service, four wreaths will be laid including one on behalf of the families and descendants of the men commemorated.

After the service, afternoon tea and refreshments will be served at the Wesley Road Club.

We would like to thank all those public bodies, ex-service organisations, charities and individuals who have donated money so that the refurbishment and renovation can be achieved. Also the Rev Allan Coutts and his team at St Thomas’ Church, Trowbridge (who are now responsible for Holy Trinity Church) for their continuing help.

Tony Pocock, Chairman, Trowbridge & District White Ensign Association.
