I read with interest the letters this week on the migrant crisis and I have to admit to mixed feelings.

Ben Findlay seems to be having a knock at the well off by aiming a shot at Lord and Lady Weymouth. Really quite boring, Ben.

Rosalind Wheare and Mark Maddrell plead for us to barrage our MPs into agreeing to take more refugees.

This begs a few questions. How many of the hundreds of thousands of these poor people are actually refugees and how many are economic migrants? You may hate these labels, but it is nonetheless true that a large proportion are fleeing nothing.

Many thousands of these people are refusing to register at borders and then protesting when entry is forbidden. Why refuse to register? Why is this not being reported? It is a sad fact but a fact nonetheless that not all of these migrants or refugees will be law-abiding citizens and to date I have heard nothing of how checks will be made to protect the citizens of the countries people will finally settle in.

There are daily complaints already about the numbers of convicted criminals that have been allowed in or that have slipped through the net from normal, if not huge, free EU movement migration.

People have tried to score political points at the expense of this crisis, like the Mayor of Bristol telling people to take people in. Will the Mayor step up when it all goes wrong? Will he vet everyone? Not just the refugees but those volunteering homes?

It absolutely amazes me how when we can't house all of our own citizens a select few want us to try and house thousands more. I believe 20,000 is a good number, and well done for selecting them from the refugee camps around Syria.

I have sat on so many planning committees and heard so many people speak against affordable housing that I now find the clamour to appear to be doing the right thing quite deplorable.

However, the upside is, I suppose, that those who write in to ask us all to help and take more people, can be added to a database for future reference when more social and affordable housing is required, listed under "development welcome"?

We could also add the addresses of the second homes, tax payer funded, bleating MPs telling the Government to "take more", starting with Yvette Cooper (Balls) who also has a hubby at home who could help with the move.
