In a democratic society anyone should be able to show their respects in their own way, not wear certain clothes or sing a certain song dictated by some establishment figure, so the fuss being made because someone did not sing the National Anthem and was wearing casual clothes at a ceremony is a very shallow idea of what respect is, and an example of what is wrong with our society/world.

For example any honest soldier in battle would surely admit they are not fighting for queen and country etc but their comrades in arms. The actual wars are often dictated for some political reason, not defending one's homeland, and what one wears or sings to show respect for the fallen is neither here or there.

What is lacking from our society/world is not religion or some dictate about what to wear or sing but a sense of intelligent compassion D Thomas, Hisomley, Nr Dilton Marsh
