I WAS very interested to read Karen Grant’s letter about commemorating the production of the Spitfire as part of the town’s wartime history. I wonder however if many people know that there was also a a smaller works in Hilperton Road, opposite the Victoria Road junction, now Kenton Drive. One of my memories is of just a small group of us children watching Queen Mary visit this factory. Various premises were also used in the town centre and these too had Royal visits.

It is good that memories can be recorded for future generations, One of the exciting annual events during those dark days of war was for us the annual National Savings Weeks. Each year this was was dedicated to one of the armed services, which included Salute the Spitfire. A target was set, which was especially used for paying towards one of the Spitfires being produced locally. Every day at lunchtime there was a small ceremony outside of the the Town Hall, when the total amount saved to date was recorded on a large wooden thermometer.

Whilst therefore I agree that the Spitfire Works in Bradley Road should be especially remembered, it would be good for a plaque, perhaps on a small plinth, to be also placed either outside the Town Hall or in The Park, as a permanent reminder of the important part Trowbridge played in the war effort.
