SOMEBODY called up for jury service was given a booklet outlining his duties. It said copies were available in six or more languages.
If a juror cannot read English is it likely that he/she will be able to follow court proceedings? Another misguided attempt to show our multicultural credentials.
I note that accused or witnesses whose native language is not English are provided with interpreters at our expense. We are one of the few countries to do this – in most countries those appearing in court and requiring an interpreter must pay for it themselves.
This is yet another example of needless public expenditure.
