THE current Board of Trustees of Trowbridge Town Hall Trust at recent meeting between the Friends of Trowbridge Town Hall and two board members, through their chairman, acknowledged that there had been a breakdown between the board and the friends, resulting in the volunteering friends group withdrawing its support to the board.

The Friends group was established to support activities leading to the restoration of the town hall to its former glory as a facility for the community, culture, heritage and arts. The board’s focus would appear to be on a professional centre for the latter.

The board recently decided, we were told, to appoint/employ, without any sort of open advertisement or interviewing procedure, a recently resigned board member and member of Trowbridge Arts to the position of building manager/artistic director.

The Board of Trustees chairman also confirmed at that same meeting that most, if not all, of the events organised by Trowbridge Arts at the town hall were not run at a profit and were indeed subsidised to some degree whereas all the events and booking arranged by the Friends Group were profitable, raising much needed funds to help in the preservation and enhancement of the town hall.

Without the support of the volunteering friends group and with questionable appointments we fail, and am very sorry to say, to see much of a future for our beloved town hall.
