I KNOW this is becoming a tedious subject, however on the last two consecutive Sundays I have seen ridiculous examples of what is so terribly wrong with the traffic situation in the centre of Bradford on Avon.

The first was a large lorry coming down Silver Street and attempting to turn into Market Street! A manoeuvre some private divers might find challenging in a family car, especially with on-coming traffic. Needless to say it took several attempts resulting in a tailback as far as Woolley Street.

Last Sunday afternoon walking through the town a large truck came across the bridge from the south side (surely illegal) and attempted to turn into Market Street, which it could not due to traffic coming down the hill. While waiting this caused a considerable traffic jam across the bridge.

Eventually some kind but misguided person at the end of The Shambles stopped to allow the lorry to pass (it could barely pass between The Swan and the old Post Office and mounted the pavement) causing a traffic jam back at least to Masons Lane.

I know people in Bradford whine endlessly about the “traffic situation,” but nothing is done. Why are lorries over a certain size simply not banned, and all not making deliveries? They have been in most historic German town and city centres, why not here? There are very simple, cheap solutions, which do not involve building an aesthetically hideous and environmentally destructive bypass.
