RANDOM act of kindness or good deed for the day? Call it what you will. It was a seemingly small action carried out by someone in Trowbridge whom I cannot thank personally.

On Wednesday, January 13 I set off on some errands. As I’m 65 years old I prefer to trundle around town with my shopping trolley in Trowbridge. My last errand of the day should have been posting a birthday card with a bank note taped inside to my nephew in London.

I was about to place the card inside my large bag, but instead stuffed it into a coat pocket for fear that I would forget to post it. With most errands completed, I dutifully stopped at the post box near my home and fished in my pocket for the card, but it was gone!

Later I phoned my sister to tell her the bad news. We speculated as to whether a kind stranger might pick it up and send it on its way. I heard a saying once; character is built not only by what others see you do, but also what you do when no one else is looking.

Whether anyone was looking on or not, it gave me such a lift when my sister said the card arrived.

If any reader happens to know who posted my card for me, please pass on my heartfelt thanks for a small kindness that had big consequences because I would not have been able to replace the lost cash.
