I FEEL I should place on record my experience as the young son of an innkeeper during the Second World War.
First shortages – we were never short of beer, but always short of everything else: no cigarettes, crisps, whisky, rum, in fact you name it, we did not have it, but of course it was war, so everyone did their best.
Then, worse still, no replacement beer glasses. I suggested jam jars. It was found a large jam jar equalled a pint of beer. So it was accepted.
As my folks had turned part of the inn into a music venue, some people with good singing voices attended. As it was war, we were all in this together.
I like to think we would be the same now. Under Winston Churchill’s leadership, we won though. Pray God it does not happen again, but I say that the same British courage is waiting. See how we stand up to Brexit.
