AMONG the reports of the tragic happenings in Kensington, one resident said that he had allowed his bath to overflow as a means of stopping the smoke etc coming under the door. I wonder whether if all residents had done the same it would have reduced the spread of the fire.
Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, says that expert opinion does not think that sprinklers are necessarily the best answer to combat fire risk. As there has never been a fatality from fire in a building fitted with sprinklers it would be helpful if he would enlighten us as to what the best answer is.
One step which could be readily taken without any building alterations would be to provide each apartment with a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher – I am surprised that this is not already a duty of landlords.
