IT is very interesting to see that the new access to Adcroft Surgery (the new Trowbridge Health Centre) is via Hammersmith Fields, off Seymour Road. Is this a tenuous link to some forgotten piece of Trowbridge history?
Early in the Second World War Adcroft Boys’ School moved from what is now Lower Courts at the top of Timbrell Street (along with the girls from the nearby British School) to the new Nelson Haden School in Frome Road. Some of the original buildings still remain. Almost immediately Adcroft School was taken over by the Hammersmith School of Building – evacuated from London. They remained there until the end of the war when the premises for many years then became the Adcroft School of Building, which was largely residential.
When I attended the Victoria Day Commercial School in the town centre the two schools had links. We shared some of their sports facilities and social activities. The field on which the health centre has been built was used by the boys from both schools for football.
We also used what was then known as The Tabernacle Gym, latterly part of the United Church, with highly respected and well-loved Mr Lee Gerard, PE teacher at both schools.
