A PLEASANT walk into the centre of town and around the surrounding areas has become somewhat of a ‘logistical’ nightmare for myself and my blind husband. The number of ‘hazards’ we encounter is ever increasing. What with ‘A’ boards, wheelie bins, black boxes, supermarket trolleys and cars parked on pavements, it is frustrating to say the least.

I encountered a vehicle parked in the middle of the pavement on the busy Hilperton Road last week. I had no choice but to wait until it was safe both ways to walk around the vehicle and into the road, pushing my granddaughter in her pushchair. Fortunately the traffic travelling both ways stopped to let me cross the road as they could see the problem.

This is pure disregard and selfishness on the part of the driver, who no doubt, couldn’t travel a few more yards to park his car off the road. I thought this type of parking was against the law. We encounter this type of parking on most walks into town, half parked on the road and pavement, or the whole vehicle parked on the pavement. The wheelie bin and black box issue is ongoing, after collection some of the bins/boxes are just left in the middle of the pavement and have to be moved by myself. Not only is it difficult for myself and my husband, but there is an increase in the use of mobility scooters who no doubt encounter the same problems.

With just a little thought all this could be avoided, I appreciate that most people would be unaware of the hazards they create for the non sighted/partially sighted people and others with physical difficulties, but it can be quite challenging at times.

On a more positive note, we encounter some very helpful and understanding people who are always willing to help, opening doors and offering support if needed. For which we say Thank you, it makes a huge difference.
