FIRST of all English Heritage closed the A344 past Stonehenge (the original road pre-dating the A303) without giving us a chance to object that I remember. So to avoid the crawl past Stonehenge on the A303 we went through Larkhill.
Then with brilliant timing the Packway was closed in the height of the summer traffic for a roundabout construction, (usually roundabouts are built round the existing junction and there is only minor disruption); the completion date on the Wiltshire Council website has changed from September 26 to October 20.
Then Fargo Road was closed with diversion up Tombs Road; now Tombs Road has just been closed, causing our last visitor an extra 40 minutes journey time. Neither of these last two is on the website. Signs appeared saying ‘MoD road but with civilian bus stops and pillar boxes present’. I find this hard to believe.
On two recent occasions the military have considered it reasonable to disrupt town centre roads: once with an eight-wheel drive monster towing another through Bath in the rush hour and on the other time a track laying vehicle through Marlborough on a busy day.
