Underage selling

I was recently at the checkout of a local supermarket when the checkout girl said that she would need to get clearance as my shopping included a bottle of wine.

I pointed out I was quite obviously over 18 by some 60 plus years but she said clearance was necessary as she was under 18 Have we reached the stage where customers need to ask staff to produce proof of their age when purchasing alcohol?

This is not a new stage. It has long been a requirement. It is a very silly one though. Everyone knows that checkout staff are simply scanning items through by their barcodes. What does their age matter to the scanning process?
