Grease

Bristol Hippodrome

Until Saturday

ALMOST 50 years since Grease first came to our screens, it is still one of the most loved musicals of all time, with the stage version just as popular as the original film.

David Gilmore's remake of the 70's classic at the Hippodrome stars The Wanted's Tom Parker and Over the Rainbow's Danielle Hope as male and female leads Danny and Sandy.

Bright lights in the shape of the iconic quiff hairstyle hung over the stage until the band opened the show playing a medley of all the Grease favourites, including Grease is the Word and Greased Lightning.

The vocals from all the cast were very impressive, especially from Ryan Heenan, playing Doody, and Oliver Jacobson as Rodger.

One scene that particularly stood out for me was in the garage where Kenickie, portrayed by Tom Senior, shows the rest of the T-Birds his new wheels, Greased Lightning. The cast broke into song before a brass instrumental saw the car spun round to reveal silver glitter paint work, with atmospheric strobe lights drawing the audience into the action.

American singer Jimmy Osmond makes an appearance as the Teen Angel, after previously playing the role in the West End. He was clearly a hit with the audience, as he playfully flirted with them as they sang along with him.

The finale got the audience up on their feet clapping along as the whole cast performed a medley of the most loved songs, and as the cast left the stage they deservedly got a standing ovation for their energetic, enthusiastic and uplifting performance.
