The Arc Theatre, Trowbridge

Runs until Saturday

Trowbridge Players take their audience on a thought provoking journey as the ever present narrator Susan, strongly played by Jenny Riddle, struggles to find contentment in her everyday life.  Through the first person narrative, the audience is subjected to Susan’s thoughts, feelings and experiences, challenging them as the line between fantasy and reality becomes increasingly blurred.
The witty humour throughout the performance from each of the well-delivered characters provides a light hearted feel, despite the serious issues this challenging and gripping Alan Ayckbourn play explores.  Each character is essentialas the dialogue between them draws out the subplots and issues behind Susan’s unhappiness.  Repetition of dialogue which is used effectively to subtly link the two contrasting worlds portrayed on stage, and foreshadow events to come.  Both the young actors, Chloe Johnson and Shayne Hiscock, show great enthusiasm and natural talent, delivering each line impeccably.  The more experienced cast members also give excellent portrayals with the consistency of the characters’ individual traits and habits charming the audience.  The intense climax in the closing scenes is particularly high quality. The effective use of lighting, sound and costume enhance the performance significantly, with pathetic fallacy aiding the increasingly dark atmosphere.  Whilst following the plot can be demanding, this only adds to the connection between the audience and Susan, as both are left genuinely surprised and bewildered by the final
twist.
