OH dear, oh dear, oh dear. There was such a dearth of items in West Wiltshire, particularly Melksham. Last week your reporter John Baker, and you, had to resort to a headline-grabbing, sensational attack on a local councillor.
Far from being a joke, I think the item poster was in observation of the fact that although Saudi Arabian women are going to be allowed to drive, they will still be subject to barbaric practices such as stoning.
Of the 100-plus Muslims in Melksham, how many are, in spite of presumptions by your reporter, stated they were offended? Even the Imam of Melksham mosque declined to make any comment.
As for our Conservative MP, Michelle Donelan, has she ever met Councillor Sankey? Did she check with him his view of the post before making her unhelpful comments, again I presume after prompting by John Baker? So much for supporting your colleagues. I wonder how many votes she has lost as a result of this.
Even Councillor Jon Hubbard, a Liberal Democrat, said “He’s a nice guy, but an idiot.”
With whom is Councillor Sankey “in disgrace”? How many Melksham town councillors, also after prompting by John Baker, have publicly condemned him?
It seems John Baker and the Wiltshire Times have attempted to denigrate Councillor Sankey, and stir up racial tension where none exists.
It is they who are in disgrace and should be ashamed.
