SPEEDING drivers and motorists parking in the wrong place outside Horningsham Primary School will be made more aware of their actions thanks to road signs designed by pupils from the school.

Designs by Year 6 pupils Finlay Ballamy and Lucy Cooke were chosen and have now been made into signs that will be placed at either end of the school on Church Street, Horningsham, Warminster.

The duo also received family passes to Centre Parcs as a reward for their designs at a presentation at the school on Wednesday.

Police Community Support Officer Elizabeth Harmsworth, of Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team, went in to the school last month to organise the project because of the problem of people parking on bends and affecting visibility of other drivers, especially at peak times.

PCSO Harmsworth said: “Excess speed is one of the most common causes of death or serious injury on the roads and hazardous parking creates dangers for all road users and can hide school children from the view of approaching motorists.

“We all have concerns about getting children to school safely but it has been refreshing to speak to the pupils about road safety, who have all been very enthusiastic in their efforts.

“They have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this project and have produced some excellent work.

“Through the pupils we are helping spread the message to parents, carers and other road users travelling past the school.”

The winning designs were picked by Inspector Alan Webb along with a representative from Centre Parcs.

Inspector Webb said: “The quality of the signs was very impressive and the two winning deigns we felt had the clarity and clear message to be used at either end of the school.”

Headteacher Carole Andrews said: “We’re thrilled and very grateful to the police to have had them come in and run this project for the children who have really enjoyed designing their own signs.

“We hope that the signs which are put up will help with parking and speeding problems we have at the school.”

More work will be done at the school during May for road safety week.
