TROWBRIDGE primary school Castle Mead is one of 15 schools taking part in the Barons’ Charter Programme, with more than 100 pupils involved in designing their very own baron sculpture.

The Barons’ Charter Art Trail is being run by The Trussell Trust, together with Salisbury Cathedral and Wild in Art, to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.

From June, 25 life-sized 3D baron will be decorated and displayed to create a free trail across the city of Salisbury for 12 weeks, resulting in an auction in October to support The Trussell Trust.

However, as part of the project, schools are being given the opportunity to buy and decorate their own 90cm high reinforced fibreglass baron sculptures, with Castle Mead Primary one of those taking up the opportunity.

Head of Castle Mead School Tracy Boulton said: “Castle Mead School is thrilled to be involved with the Barons’ Charter project, especially as the school is located in Trowbridge, home to Henry de Bohun, one of the original Magana Carta signatories.

“The project provides us with a unique opportunity to bring this very local aspect of history to life for our children. Their involvement will give the school a lasting reminder of the Magna Carta and links to our own school charter, which is based on the principles of equality and respect.

“The children have already discussed names for our baron and designs incorporating the school colours, the de Bohun coat of arms and the emblem of the school, which includes a castle and bat.”

The finished decorated barons will be displayed at Salisbury Cathedral from June 27 for two weeks, before being returned to their schools and youth groups. Accompanying each baron is a plaque and an online educational resource pack.
