THE High Sheriff of Wiltshire visited The Mead Community Primary School on Wednesday (November 23) to talk to pupils about his recent expedition and the dangers of climate change.

The adventurer, who was the first person in history to reach the Geographic and Magnetic North and South Poles, spoke to 240 pupils from River Mead Primary School, Castle Mead Primary School, The Grove Primary School, Holt Primary School and The Mead.

He recently returned from an expedition in the north coast of Alaska and Greenland which aimed to highlight global warming.

Geography teacher at The Mead, Nicky Ellis, said: “It was a really exciting for all the children to hear him talk.

“They have been following his recent challenge throughout and have been talking to him on a live link, so for them to meet him in the flesh was really brilliant.

“Global warming is such a relevant topic at the moment and it’s essential that children are aware of it.

"Pupils showed work to David they have been working on over the past term and also delivered presentations which were all great."

Before visiting the Hilperton primary school, Mr Hempleman-Adams paid a visit to Julian House’s social enterprise The Trowbridge Bike Workshop in Duke Street to launch the charity’s Brain of Wessex quiz, which will be held in March next year.

He said: “I was delighted to be asked to be the Quizmaster for Julian House’s Brain of Wessex 2017 in March.

“It should be a great evening for everyone involved.”

The Brain of Wessex is a corporate quiz event which was launched in 2006 and ran until 2009, when the Civic Hall was closed down for refurbishment in 2010, but is making a return next year.

Stephen Chesworth, Community and Events Fundraiser at Julian House, said: “The Brain of Wessex has been successful in attracting teams from a variety of business sectors who see it as a fun event, but also to network, and entertain clients, as well as a staff building exercise.”
