A HORROR car crash along the A361 between Devizes and Trowbridge has seen two drivers taken to hospital from internal injuries and broken bones.

Police are appealing for witnesses after two cars collided at The Strand, near the turning for Great Hinton between Seend and Semington, just after 4pm yesterday.

A silver BMW Coupe, driven by a 21-year-old man from Salisbury, and a brown Honda Jazz, belonging to an 81-year-old Trowbridge woman, were completed destroyed in the crash.

Both drivers are still at Bristol's Southmead Hospital after suffering a number of broken bones and internal injuries.

Fire crews from Trowbridge and Melksham arrived at the scene at 4.22pm and managed to free the 21-year-old from his car using hydraulic rescue equipment, before handing him over to Wiltshire Air Ambulance, which flew him to hospital.

The woman was also taken to hospital by road ambulance.

The road was closed until around 10.30pm while Wiltshire Police carried out an investigation into the crash.

Investigating officer PC Dean Hall said: "We would like to speak to anyone who was travelling on this stretch of road at around 4:00pm yesterday afternoon and may have seen the BMW or Honda Jazz prior to the collision.

"This is the main road between Devizes and Trowbridge and the location of the collision was not far from The Lamb on the Strand pub."

Seend Parish Council chairman said: "There have been some accidents along that stretch of road and there have been fatalities over the years but I would not say it is any more dangerous than any other particular areas.

"I hope they both make a swift recovery."
