RAIL services were delayed between Swindon and Bristol Parkway this afternoon when a lorry hit the A429 bridge at Hullavington.
Network Rail apologised for the delays while engineers checked the safety of the bridge.
A429 Bridge, Hullavington. You'd think that many warnings would give people the hint, but not today - or ten times last year! #heightlimit pic.twitter.com/afK8wJwo4L

A spokesman for National Rail said:"We work with local authorities across the country to make sure all our bridges have appropriate, accurate signs advising drivers of height restrictions. Our latest figures show this bridge in Hullavington is one of the top 10 most frequently struck bridges on the UK rail network, and we would like to remind drivers of large vehicles once again to pay attention to these signs before attempting to pass under the bridge.
"Bridge strikes are extremely costly for National Rail, and in turn the tax payer, as well as disruptive for passengers as trains cannot pass over until the bridge has been inspected to ensure it is still safe to use.
"It is vitally important that drivers are aware of their vehicle's dimensions and do not attempt to pass under bridges that their vehicles cannot fit through."
