HOME department store Leekes in Melksham celebrated its 25th anniversary of opening in the town on Saturday and Sunday.

The Wales-based company staged a special weekend birthday party at the store on the Beanacre Road with fun activities for shoppers and children.

There was a special appearance from Melksham’s mayor, Cllr Adrienne Westbrook, who helped to cut the birthday cake.

Customers also enjoyed appearances from TV chef Peter Sidwell on Saturday and Hari Ghotra on Sunday, as well as musical entertainment and a variety of activities and funfair rides for children.

Dave Watson, store manager, said: “We are delighted that so many of our loyal customers turned up to the event to celebrate our 25th birthday. As an independent family-run retailer, this is a key achievement and we’re looking forward to enjoying the next 25 years here in Melksham.”

One of the staff, Jon Miller, has worked at the store since it opened in 1992. He said: “I can clearly remember the original muddy building site which we purchased and have transformed into the beautiful home department store it is today.

“On a personal note, I also met my wife of 15 years while working at the store – I can’t believe I have spent 25 years working for our great family business. Time has flown by.”

Shoppers were offered a chance to win a selection of prizes in the free prize draw, as well as take advantage of special offers over the weekend.
