CHILDREN at Staverton Primary School are ready to roar as they prepare for their end of term show - The Lion King.

Altogether 65 Year 5 and 6 children are involved in the play, which will have three performances from Monday to Wednesday at 6pm.

To get them inspired for the play, they went to see the real show in the West End at the Lyceum Theatre back in March.

For the last two weeks, the sister of teacher James Mead, Debbie Mitchell, has been using bits and bobs from the scrap store, before sewing them together to make costumes for the Lion King. The pupils have also helped, making backdrops, face painting, taking photos and helping with costumes.

Fynn Russell, 11, who is the Simba understudy, said: “We have done between 20-30 sessions to prepare for this. I’m sure it will go well. I am looking forward to the performance. This role gives me an opportunity to realise my acting skills.”

Holly Duff, 11, is working backstage controlling the background music. She says her role is ideal for her as she gets stage fright.

“It is good that there are roles for people who may not be comfortable on stage so that everyone can contribute and be part of the play,” said Holly. “It can be nerve-wracking, waiting for the right moment to put the music on but it is very enjoyable and it has worked well so far.”

Felix Belly, 10, who is playing a hippo, said: “To help me deal with the nerves, I close my eyes, count to 10 and then I’m okay.”
