KIERAN Baggs believes Melksham Town’s opening two Southern League Division One South games have laid down the template for how his side should approach the new season.

The infiLED Arena men made their divisional debut with a 1-0 home win over Evesham United on Saturday and immediately added a further three points with a single-goal triumph at Paulton Rovers on Tuesday night

Striker Neikell Plummer scored both goals in those games as promoted Town began their new campaign in fine style, and boss Baggs reckons the performances in those fixtures have set the standard as his squad acclimatise to their new surroundings.

“If you look at the first two games, we would have been happy to just get some points on the board when the fixtures came out, so to get maximum points out of those games takes the pressure off massively,’’ Baggs told the Wiltshire Times.

“Now we can just go out and try to keep picking up points over the first couple of months.

“You can string a good run of results together and then round the corner a bad run comes, so we won’t get carried away and too excited about anything.

“We’ll just look to tick off points under the radar.’’

Melksham return to FA Cup action on Saturday with divisional rivals Blackfield & Langley the visitors to Wiltshire for a preliminary round tie.

Town will then have under 48 hours to prepare for a league match on their own turf against Bath side Larkhall Athletic on Bank Holiday Monday, providing Baggs with the opportunity to fully utilise his squad.

“We’ve got a few injuries and a few players unavailable on Saturday – a couple are at a wedding – so it will be a time where we can change things up,’’ he added.

“We’ve got two games in quick succession, including a Bank Holiday game, so it’s a chance to use our squad and freshen things up, which I definitely will do.

“It’s about making sure the two games are managed.’’

Prize money of nearly £3,000 is up for grabs this weekend and the Melksham manager added: “We saw with the FA Vase run last season it (a cup run) can really galvanise the club and get the town behind you.

“It can also be financially rewarding for the football club and it’s a nice one for the players to be involved in.

“For me, the bread and butter in the league, but for the boys, it’s nice to go out and enjoy a cup run.’’
