MORE than 500 people took part in the 12th annual Bath Moonlight Walk with the aim of raising over £60,000 for the Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley.

Last year’s walk raised £60,000 and the organisers hope that Saturday’s walk in Bath will raise a similar amount.

The event began with a ‘Pre-Party’ from 8pm that included retro music, stalls and a raffle competition to win a Mulberry handbag worth over £750.

Walkers wore fabulous 80s outfits and were rewarded for their fundraising efforts with free chocolates at the start handed out by Dorothy House nurses and were given a Danish pastry and bottle of water at the finish.

This year’s theme for the Bath Moonlight Walk was ‘Walk back to the 80s’ and an entertaining warm-up session before the walk was hosted by comedy character ‘Cheryl’ a lycra-clad, 1980s-style dance teacher performed by actress, Ginny Adams, from www.MojoMoves.co.uk a new comedy fitness class running in Box, Trowbridge, Frome and Bath.

Vicky Duncan and Mel Nicholas, from Bradford on Avon, said: “Eleven of us took part in the Moonlight Walk in memory of our great friend, Lucinda Mawer and to raise money for Dorothy House.

“Lucinda had a rare form of cancer and was given such amazing care at the hospice before she died we wanted to give something back. We loved dressing up in eighties clothes, supporting the hospice and meeting people on the walk.”

Emily Knight, Events Fundraiser, Dorothy House Hospice Car, said: “The Bath Moonlight Walk always has a special atmosphere and this year was no exception.

“The eighties outfits were simply stunning and it was great to see so many men joining in the walk with the ladies this year. Thank you to all who took part and to all our volunteers who helped make the event such a success. Don’t forget to send in your sponsorship money by 16th November to help us fund vital care for our patients.”

All walkers were invited to either pledge some sponsorship or make a personal donation and £40 will fund one hour of patient care in the Inpatient Unit at Dorothy House in Winsley.

Dorothy House cares for over 3,000 patients, family members and carers every year across Wiltshire, Somerset and Bath and North-East Somerset. For every £1 received from the NHS, the hospice has to raise a further £4 to provide their services.
