WILTSHIRE'S double Olympic silver medallist Jazz Carlin is taking a complete break from swimming after injury and illness.

Carlin, who won silver medals in both the 400 metre and 800m freestyle events at Rio 2016, will no longer be considered for funding by British Swimming.

The 28-year-old, who is from Swindon but now lives in Bradford on Avon, has struggled for form in both pool and open water swimming since her Olympic success, but is expected to return to the sport.

"Jazz Carlin is taking time out at the moment to get ready for the season after a difficult year with illness and injury," British Swimming said in a statement.

Carlin’s 2018 campaign was hampered by illness after it was revealed she was suffering from pneumonia earlier this year.

She went on to finish sixth in the Commonwealth Games 800m final on Australia's Gold Coast in April as well as 14th in the women's 10km event at the European Championships in Scotland.

But the four-time Commonwealth Games medallist had to withdraw from last week's 10km World Cup in China due to illness.

British Swimming announced it had selected 54 swimmers for funding under its world-class performance programme for the 2018/19 season "following an extensive selection procedure".

Hannah Miley, who won bronze in the women's 400m individual medley at last month's European Championships in Glasgow, and Commonwealth Games 400m individual medley champion Aimee Willmott have both lost their funding.
