MARLBOROUGH chairman Gary Sharp admits the club's insatiable appetite for success is creating its own problems as they outgrow their home facilities on The Common.

The club's first team made it six wins from six in South West One East on Saturday as they got the better of county rivals Chippenham 36-21 at home to continue their dream start to their maiden season at regional level.

Marlborough's second string, 48-0 winners over Devizes 2nd on Saturday, are also top of Dorset & Wilts Two North, the Colts, U15s and U13s team are 100 per cent from their opening matches and U11s and U12s have made cup progress and the establishment of girls and ladies rugby on The Common is also being pursued.

Senior and Colts midweek training has already been moved to Tidworth under lights to preserve pitches, while the club has also gained permission to install barriers along their first team pitch in line with RFU Level Six regulations.

But Sharp concedes the club may have to take a longer term view on their home as they pursue their ambitions.

"It’s just fantastic, there’s a real buzz about the club at the moment,'' said Sharp.

"We have some real talent on show from our minis through to our senior sides and an amazing team of coaches, staff, volunteers and members.

"The support we have had from Marlborough Town Council has been just brilliant. They have checked out the rules on Common land usage and agreed to allow the club to put up a temporary post and single rail barrier along both sides of the first team pitch, a stipulation by the RFU for clubs at level six and above, for player and spectator safety.

"We are rapidly outgrowing the space available to club on the Common and are looking at all sorts of ideas and alternatives. If the club continues to progress who knows where we could end up, the sky really is the limit.''

On the pitch, director of coaching Elisi Vunipola's first team continued their superb start, despite Chippenham opening the scoring with converted try.

The hosts responded as Amori Nailago sent Pio Tuwai over on nine minutes before Joeli Radovu did likewise to send Tuwai in for his second.

A flare-up just before half-time saw Chippenham skipper Aaron Clark and Marlborough's Ben Fulton sent off but after the break, the home side's Joe Visei handed off a defender and sent Nailagho over, Jake Williams adding the extras.

Chippenham replied with a converted try before Mitieli Vulikijapani stepped inside and got over, Williams converting.

Another Chippenham converted score followed but Vulikijapani showed his finishing ability when picking up a pass on halfway line and outpacing the defence to dive over in the corner.

Finally, Semisi Rasivo gathered a loose lineout, turned and ran over to complete the scoring.

Royal Wootton Bassett continued their flawless home start in South West One East despite slipping to fourth in the table due to the lack of a bonus point in a 20-14 success over county rivals Trowbridge on Saturday.

Both sides showed early determination and a Bassett attack in the 10th minute saw Trowbridge penalised at the ruck for failing to stay on their feet, home fly-half Tom Fieldsend landing the penalty.

Trowbridge though, hit back with attacking rugby that brought a converted try and Bassett's resources were tested as number eight Neil Smith was lost to a leg injury.

Worse was to follow for Bassett when a superb flowing move from Trowbridge saw the ball offloaded several times allowing a second score under the posts.

Trowbridge led 14-3 but started to struggle with the pace at which Bassett were moving the ball.

A penalty on the 22 saw quick-thinking scrum-half Jefeti Vakalalabure tap and go over to reduce the deficit.

Then just before the interval a neat break by winger Scott Douglas was just held up but Vakalalabure was on hand again to add a second in the corner.

Bassett upped the forward pressure in the second half and midway through, Fieldsend delivered a delicately-weighted grubber kick that he was able to pick up himself.

The ball was fed to veteran replacement Kyle Lovell who was able to force his way over for the try. Fieldsend converting as his side held out for victory.
