CORSHAM Town moved up to third in the Toolstation League First Division with a 3-0 success over Portishead Town on Saturday.

Jon Baxley, Lewis McCarron and substitute Ben Selman netted for Justin Flowers’ men.

The trip to bottom-of-the-league Portishead provided Corsham with their fifth win in eight games, with just one defeat so far this term.

Manager Flowers says it is important for his side to pick up the victories while his team are playing well, but admits he has been surprised at how well his men have started the league campaign.

“It was another good result for us. At the moment we have been playing teams who were in and around us so it was important the players are up for the games against teams who are at the bottom of the table,” he said.

“We are up to third now. I think the game against Chard the week before was massive because they were four points ahead of us, so had we lost it would have been seven points.

“After a great result there and a win at the weekend I think we are two points behind Cheddar now.

“I have to give a lot of credit to the players. I said to them I knew I was confident we could get a good side and a good atmosphere together.

“I didn’t realise that would happen so quickly.

“They’re buying into everything we ask of them and they’re making it so easy for me as a manager at the moment.

“We are picking the same team and we are having the same tactics, we just need to maintain the level we are playing at.

“The atmosphere is getting better and better, which means it is a great place to be around at the moment.”

Josh Bright returns for Corsham this weekend when they face Radstock Town at home.

Elsewhere, Calne Town weren’t so fortunate as they were pegged back by a late leveller in a 1-1 draw at Bishops Lydeard, Matt Jenkins’ long-range effort having given the Lillywhites the lead.

They face Portishead at home at the weekend.

Devizes Town suffered a 1-0 defeat at Nursteed Road to Oldland Abbotonians and will face Wells City this coming weekend.
