AN elderly Melksham cyclist died of multiple injuries after being in collision with a van on the Seend to Worton Road back in May, an inquest was told.

Malcolm Philip McDiarmid, 77, died after being thrown into the air after colliding with the van at the High Street, Bulkington, crossroads.

The inquest in Salisbury on Wednesday (Oct 10) heard that Mr McDiarmid emerged from the High Street into the path of a van travelling towards Melksham on the Seend to Worton road.

Despite swerving to the offside the van driver could not avoid a collision, which led to Mr McDiarmid, of Craybourne Road, Melksham, receiving a glancing blow.

He was thrown into the air, and then onto the road, causing the multiple traumatic injuries which led to his death at the scene.

The accident happened on May 21 and an inquest into his death opened on May 29 and was adjourned.

The Assistant Coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, Ian Singleton, recorded a verdict of road traffic collision.

He added: “The reason why Malcolm emerged into the path of the oncoming van cannot be ascertained.”
