BOOK-worms at a Semington school have smashed their previous record for the Government’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The number of avid readers at St George’s Primary rose this year, making the school the most improved in the Trowbridge area.

Thirty-one children completed the challenge, a 17.24 per cent increase.

Headteacher Pip Hunt said: “Although we may be small, we are mighty when it comes to reading!

“We are very proud of our new accolade and it just goes to show how important and enjoyable reading has become to the children at St George’s. We now can’t wait to smash our new record next summer.”

Every year local libraries organise the Summer Reading Challenge and children from all over the country take part.

Not only is it a free fun event for the summer holidays, but it also helps to keep children reading over the summer so that school in September is not quite so much of a big shock.

Mrs Hunt added: “This year, the school has had a big push on reading as it is the key to success for all areas of learning.

“The children’s increased passion for reading is evident as the number of children who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge this year increased by over 17 per cent.”
