A HISTORY exhibition to remember what Melksham was like during the First World War is to go on tour.

More than 700 people visited the Melksham Remembers Project at Melksham Town Hall last weekend.

Project manager Beth Thomas said: “They were able to discover what life was like for the people of Melksham and the surrounding area during the First World War and to find out about some of the people of the time.

“Many people said they wished it was on for longer. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive which made the hundreds of hours doing the research worthwhile.”

A dozen volunteers worked over the past year to piece together what was happening 100 years ago.

There were 17 information panels, photographs and information, hands-on activities such as making up a prisoner of war parcel, and items from the First World War.

There was also a short film based on the newspaper report of the Royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary to Melksham in 1917.

There will be an opportunity to see the information panels at the following venues: Village Hall, Bowerhill, on November 21; Christ Church, Shaw, from November 23–28; Church of the Holy Cross, Seend, from November 30–December 7; and St George’s Church, Semington, from December 8–9. Check with the venues for opening times.
