DEVIZES town centre remains in gridlock following a crash at Dunkirk Hill this morning and the road is set to stay closed for much of the afternoon.

A traffic officer at the scene said they hoped the road would be open in time for school pick-up time. Specialist accident investigation officers have put markers in the road and are taking measurements.

Police have confirmed that two air ambulances were called to the scene and a pedestrian was given extensive medial attention by the side of the road before being airlifted to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, with extensive injuries.

A green Volkswagen Golf was involved in the accident which happened at about 8.45am. The car driver was unhurt in the accident which smashed the nearside of the front window screen. The road remains closed between the Cross Keys in Rowde and the top of Dunkirk Hill by Shanes Castle.

The accident happened just a few yards from the former Queens Head pub and the headquarters of Devizes Budo Club.

Police are appealing for dash-cam footage of an accident.

A police spokesman said: "A male pedestrian has suffered serious injuries and has been taken to Southmead Hospital by air ambulance.

"A road closure was put in place at the Cross Keys in Rowde and the top of Dunkirk Hill and this remains in place so drivers should continue to avoid the area.

"If you were driving in the area and have captured footage which may be helpful to our investigations, please call 101 and quote log number 69 of January 25."
