A BANK of 72 solar panels installed on its roof are now producing enough electricity to power a town council’s computers.

The panels in Bradford on Avon have already contributed to the National Grid after being installed by local firm Solarsense.

Councillors voted unanimously last October to install the panels on the south facing roof of St Margaret’s Hall.

Mayor Cllr Alex Kay, the Bradford on Avon mayor and chair of its environment and planning committee, said: “ We have had very strong and positive support from the public, including representatives of both Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust and Climate Friendly BoA.

“It was encouraging and heart-warming to receive such support, which has spurred us on to get this through in time to take advantage of the current tariff scheme.”

Manager Tim Yeomans said: “When I was shown the inverter this morning even though we are in January the sun was out and the array was generating 5.8kw. That’s enough to power all the office computers.”

The council is holding a solar tea party on Sunday, March 3 from 2-4pm, with the Ramshackle Orchestra, to unveil the solar power monitor.
