WORK on repairs to the Harris Lock on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Semington is not expected to be completed until March 15.

The Canal & River Trust is repairing the crumbling walls of the lock near the Semington Dry Dock as part of routine maintenance work during the winter.

A Canal & River Trust spokesman said: “Work is going to plan to get the lock back to full health and open again.

“The next step is for our engineers to dismantle the sections of wall that have collapsed and rebuild them. It’s technical work and is planned to take until March 15.

“We had scheduled repair works on the lock from January to March anyway, so boaters will have been aware that it would be closed and be able to plan their movements around the stoppage in advance.

“The Kennet & Avon Canal is 200 years old so does need plenty of TLC. The towpath and the canal remain open, so we’d still encourage people to come and visit.”
