FREDDIE Mercury look-alike Libby Miles made a dash for glory in the Bradford on Avon Pancake Day Race but turned out to be no champion this year.

The 31st annual race across the historic market town’s ancient bridge was won by Gary MacAlister, of Steve Vick International.

In second place was Alex Warren, of the Cake Architect, and in third place Heidi Dale of chiropractors Dixon Health. Darren Mason, 31, of Kingston Estate Agents, was fourth.

“It was flipping good fun,” said Gary, 40, who comes from Trowbridge. “It was quite hard to toss the pancakes in the wind but I just went for it.”

Heidi, 24, who lives in Keynsham, said: “It was the first time I have ever entered. It was quite hard work.”

Libby, 36, dressed up as Queen singer Freddie Mercury to promote the Tuesday Matinee Club’s showing of Bohemian Rhapsody, a film about his life, at St Margaret’s Hall.

Sadly, she trailed in last behind Louise Weissel, 52, and David Tanner, 62, who were representing Extinction Rebellion, a climate change campaign group.

“I came in last, but at least I did it with style,” said Mrs Miles, who is a client services manager with Wiltshire Heights care home.

Town mayor, Cllr Alex Kay, said the event had been a flipping success. “It was great fun and it was good to see Freddie taking part to promote the Tuesday Matinee Club.”

Harry Hamlin, of funeral directors, C S Bowyer, failed to make it third time lucky after winning the race for the past two years. He was forced to drop out at the last minute after pulling a hamstring.

Around 70 spectators lined the pavements to watch the race, which involved a dash across the bridge and back, with two stops in the centre to flip the pancakes.
